Alma (Couturier) Chassé of Saint Agatha, recently of Madawaska, passed away on the afternoon of July 27, 2024 after a period of declining health.
Born in St. Joseph, NB on February 4, 1925. She grew up in Edmundston, NB. She then moved to St. Agatha after marrying her husband, Benoit Chasse.
She is survived by her children; Anita (Tom Bava) of Naples, FL, Gerard (Judy) of St. Agatha, Roger (Eileen) of St. Agatha, Ronald of Bristol, CT, Louise (Michael Bither) of Freeport, Thérèse (Gaetan Rossignol) of St. Agatha and one daughter in law, Ruth Harquail (Rino) of Edmundston, NB, 15 grandchildren, four step grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 10 step great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister, Georgianne Fongemie of Madawaska and two sisters in law, Alma Mathieu and Artheline Vyr both from Lewiston.
She was predeceased by her parents, Denis H. and Marie Anne (Martin) Couturier, her husband, Benoit, two of her sons, Yvon and Rino, one great grandchild, and five siblings.
Alma was an independent woman who took initiative, teaching herself English with the help of her Irish sister in law. At various times she worked as a farm owner and manager, as a social worker, in direct sales, as a cook, and volunteered in her community - all while raising a large family. She and her husband were generous and hospitable, ready to help, care, love and support others. Many times, just her calm, loving presence was a remedy for a difficult spell. She held a high degree of integrity, following her moral code the whole of her life.
We are very grateful for the compassion and care of the staff at the Country Village Estates of Madawaska. The clinical skill and guidance from the team at Northern Light Hospice is also appreciated.
Condolences can be shared at 9:30 am before the service at the St. Agatha Catholic Church on Monday, August 12, 2024. The service is at 10:00 am. A luncheon will be held in the basement afterward offered by the Ladies of Ste. Anne.
