He served his country proudly in the Army from 1968 to 1970 during the Vietnam War. Elmer started his own body shop business, Mer & Boys Body Shop, from his house garage in 1974. He was very active in several organizations such as the American Legion Post 145 in Frenchville, a member of the Knights of Columbus 7920 of St. Agatha, and the Frenchville Fire Department ranked as a Captain upon retiring from the department. Those that knew Elmer knew him as a kind, loving and a very strong person. Always cracking a joke and being the life of a party. He was very fond of his family, as one of the grandchildren would call him "Big Daddy". He always enjoyed being around his family. During the summer months, one could wave to him as he'd be sitting on his front porch.
