Madawaska- George Clayton Nelson, SMSGT USAF Retired, 85, passed away on January 12th surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was born on September 13, 1928 in Stockholm, Maine to George Carl and Maud Rugan Nelson.
George grew up in Stockholm, Maine. After graduating from the Caribou High School in 1947, he worked with his father as a carpenter until answering the call of his country, joining the Air Force in 1950, serving through the Korean and Vietnam era until retirement in 1973. He was so proud of his military service. Awards include a bronze star, Air Force commendation medal, Air Force outstanding unit award, Vietnam occupation and service medals.
He and his family returned to Northern Maine where he stayed active in his home town of Stockholm. As deacon of the Lutheran church he was instrumental in building a room to house the elevator, dedicated to his parents with a stain glass window for each sibling.
He was the commander for five years at the Perkins Plourd Post 136 Stockholm, 50 year member with the Masonic Lodge of Illinois, life member of the VFW Caribou, past member Loyal Order of Moose. For fourteen years he prided himself in making the Stockholm Historical Society’s fourth of July parade bigger and better each year.
George enjoyed being part of his church, the Legion and the Historical Society. He was always headed somewhere for a meeting, or to show his respect at a funeral for a veteran or going to meet his friends for coffee. He truly loved being with people. He was a collector of old cars and Lionel trains.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother in-law, John and Lillian McInnis; his brother in laws, William McInnis, Ted Stone and Mahlon Niles, and son-in-law, William Maxfield.
George is survived by his wife Muriel Nelson of Madawaska, Maine; son, Richard Nelson and wife, Betty, of Madawaska, ME; daughter, Muriel “Bootsie” Douglass of Ossipee, NH; daughter, June Maxfield of Madawaska, ME; daughter, Gail Johnson and husband, Kirk, of Ossipee, NH; Grandchildren, Tiffany Nelson, Crystal Dagraca, Carl Nelson, Fay Douglass, Desiree’ Maxfield, Shawn Maxfield and Jessica Johnson. Great-grandchildren, Abby, Leah and Maya, Trey, Josh, Damien, Alissa, Mason and Brianna ; Brothers, Hazen Nelson and partner, Becky, of Palmyra, ME; Neal Nelson and wife, Ellie, of Rutland, MA; Dana Nelson and wife, Sandra, of Ellsworth, Me; Sisters, Lois Stone of
Gardner, ME; Edythe Niles of Kittery, ME; Wanda Orino and husband, James, of Rumford, ME. Two Brother in-laws John McInnis & wife Sylvia Of Madawaska & Robert McInnis & wife Norma of Florida and several neices & nephews.
Visitation will be held on May 10th at 9am. at the Trinity Lutheran Church,
Stockholm, memorial service will follow at 11am. Service conducted by Reverend Bob Smith. Funeral Arrangements by Michaud Funeral Home.
