Guy Joseph Roy, age 69, passed away on Saturday, August 13th 2016, surrounded by his family at Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent, ME. He was born on September 14, 1946 in Upper Frenchville, ME, to Alberie O. and Stella (Albert) Roy.
For over 38 years, Guy taught the French language to generations of students in Van Buren ME. He attended Frenchville schools, the Oblate Seminary in Bucksport MEand graduated from Madawaska High School. He was also a graduate of the University of Maine at Fort Kent and the University of Maine at Orono, ME. He was a devoted member of Notre Dame du Mont Carmel, Saint Gerard Parish, where he greatly enjoyed organizing and participating in the coeur de chant (choir)for many years. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #8414 in Grand Isle, serving as Grand Knight several times.He served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972. He was an active member of L’Association Française de la Vallée du Haut-St-Jean. He was also a member of American Legion Post 145 in Frenchville, the Greater Grand Isle Historical Society and the Maine Association of Retirees.
Guy was devoted to his Roman Catholic faith and to lovingly caring for his wife and family.He served as a model of faith, character and responsibility, and did so with a positive attitude and a sense of humor. He was passionate about gardening and spent much of his free time tending to his extensive gardens and chickens in the “concessions” of Saint David, ME. He enjoyed harvesting firewood, picking wild berries and snowshoeing with members of his family. He was also dedicated to preserving and promoting the French language and Acadian/Francophone culture.
Guy is survived by his loving wife of 39+ years, Barbara J. (Martin) Roy, of Saint David, ME. They were married on December 28th, 1976. He is also survived by his 6 children, Monique Roy and her partner Julia Patten of Boston MA, Suzanne (Roy) MacIsaac and her husband Timothy of Merrimack NH,Luc Roy of Madawaska, Denise (Roy) Martin and her husband Neal of Sinclair, André Roy and his girlfriend Chelsea Martin of Bangor and Paul Roy of Madawaska, and7beautiful grandchildren, Liam, Patrick, Connor and Charlotte MacIsaac and Hanna, Kenneth and Bella Martin. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Gerald and his wife Linda Roy of Madawaska, and Philip Roy of Frenchville and 4 sisters, Adeline (Lynn) Roy Livingston and her husband Stanley of Vernon CT, Ann Roy Nelson and her husband Raymond of Vernon CT, Mariette Roy Pelletier and her husband Guy of Newington CT andThérèse (Terry) Roy of Portland ME. Guy is also survived by his beloved mother-in-law, Irene Martin of Saint Francis, with whom he shared a great love of the outdoors and gardening and many beloved brothers and sisters in law, numerous nieces and nephews, and many cousins (all of whom held a special place in his heart).
Funeral services will be held at 10am on Wednesday, August 17th 2016 at the Saint David Catholic Church, with burial to follow at the Grand Isle cemetery. Family and friends may call on Tuesday evening from 6-8pm at Michaud Funeral Home in Saint Agatha, ME and again on Wednesday morning beginning at 8:30am until 9:30am.
Guy courageously battled cancer for the last 4 years of his life and was grateful for the prayers and support of his friends and family. His family would like to give special thanks to the staff at the Cancer Treatment Centers of Americain Philadelphia and Northern Maine Medical Center and Patient Airlift Services for the excellent care and support they gave to Guy during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Patient Airlift Services (PALS), the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund or The AstraZeneca Hope Lodge of the American Cancer Society in Cheltenham, PA.
