Hermel Sirois, a long-time St. John Valley resident, passed away of natural causes at the age of 89 on Saturday, December 25, 2021.
Hermel, “Mel”, was born on December 20, 1932 in Frenchville Maine, the 12th of 13 children born to Charles and Olive (Sirois) Sirois. He was married for 64 years to the love of his life, Pierrette (Marquis) Sirois.
Hermel was raised and worked on the Sirois family dairy farm (Sirois Dairy), tending the farm and delivering milk. Upon graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country. After serving, he returned to the family farm and eventually joined his wife working at Pierrette’s Florist in Madawaska until his retirement.
Family and faith were important to Hermel. He attended Mass weekly and when COVID-19 made it difficult to attend Mass in person, he would listen to daily Mass on the TV. He enjoyed having friends and family over and was a master at cooking steak on the grill. He enjoyed playing solitaire, doing word search puzzles, watching the weather, watching westerns and action movies such as James Bond, as well as, reading the local paper. He was kind, gentle, helped many people (especially those learning how to drive) and could always be counted on to joke around.
Hermel was a member of fourth degree Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post 147 of Madawaska.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and pepere. Hermel is survived by his wife Pierrette, his daughter, Lisa (Sirois) Higgins of Waterville, Maine, grandchildren, Lucas and Emily Higgins of Waterville, Maine and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Hermel was predeceased by twelve siblings – Valere, Germaine, Louis, Corinne, Lucien, Theresa, Bertrand, Conrad, Robert, Claude, Patrick and Charles as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, 10 a.m. December 30, at St. Thomas Church, Madawaska. Burial will be in the spring at St. Thomas Cemetery. The Funeral arrangements are provided by Michaud Funeral Home, St. Agatha. Condolences may be sent to www.michaudfuneralhomes.com
