St. Agatha - Leo James “Jim” Dugal, Sr., passed away on September 26, 2023 at the Aroostook
House of Comfort in Presque Isle, Maine, after a period of declining health. Born on March 16,
1949, to George Emile Dugal and Germaine (Boucher) Dugal, he was the youngest of seven
children at the the time all ranging in age from seven to eighteen years old.
Jim was employed for 40 years with the Madawaska School Department beginning as a middle
school science teacher, then a high school science teacher. He was known for his great wit and
sense of humor, his dedication to students, and was active in many education committees and
student organizations as an advisor over the years. In 2003, Jim was named Outstanding Biology
Teacher for the State of Maine by the National Association of Biology Teachers as “a stellar
example in his field”. Jim had a very positive impact on many of his students and stated in his
retirement letter (2013), “This was never just a job, but rather a chance to be a part of the future
of so many young minds.”
He is survived by his two sons, Leo James “Jay” Dugal, Jr. and his significant other, Ellen Pride
of Brewer and Bowerbank Maine respectively; Jeremy Dugal and his wife Amy of Presque Isle,
Maine. Along with four grandchildren: Brianna (Dugal) Carter and her husband Kevin Carter,
Trevor Dugal, Lauren Dugal, and Reid Dugal. He is also survived by two sisters: Raymonde
Vanier of Quebec, Canada, and Roberta Perron of Lewiston, Maine. Jim is predeceased by his
parents, George and Germaine Dugal; a sister Pierrette Fullum; and four brothers, Gabriel,
Gilles, George and Cecil “Joe” Dugal.
Family and friends may offer condolences on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, from 8:00AM to
9:30AM at Michaud Funeral Home, St. Agatha, Maine. A graveside service will be held after at
the St. Agatha Cemetery beginning at 10:00AM.
