August 25, 1935- June 2, 2024
Mariette Bouchard, age 88, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2024, at Sunrise Montgomery Village, a senior community in Maryland. She was a longtime resident of Frenchville, Maine, and the fifth of 12 siblings born to Bertha St. Pierre and Georges Bechard of Kedgwick, NB, Canada.
A perfectionist in so many endeavors, Mariette was known for her excellent cooking: homemade bread, “cretons,” gourmet meat dishes and Coquilles St-Jacques among her favorites. She loved keeping a spotless home, thanking others through personal handwritten notes, growing flowers and vegetables and playing her traditional French-Canadian card game, “quarante cinq.”
Mariette was well-travelled, having visited many parts of the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Morocco and Europe. One of her favorite trips was Rome, Vatican City and Italy. For many years she also enjoyed winters in Florida, with her husband, relatives and friends.
For over 35 years, Mariette dedicated herself to teaching within the New Brunswick school system. Her biggest impact was in elementary education, teaching French and all core subjects. She was a proud graduate of Fredericton, NB Teachers’ College and received a Bachelor of Elementary Education and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Moncton, NB.
She served on various committees including “Le Comite du Perfectionnement Professionel des Enseignants” in Edmundston, NB, and was Treasurer for the Ladies of St. Anne, in Frenchville, Maine for several years.
A devout Catholic, Mariette served for years as a French lector at masses at the St. Luce Parish. She was known for her pleasing French-Canadian diction. She also loved to volunteer her time by writing encouraging letters and corresponding with children in need. Over the years she sponsored two children (from Haiti and India) and contributed generously to their education. She also kept her promise of making annual donations to Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity.
Mariette was predeceased by her husband, Lucien J. Bouchard, her son, John, and several of her siblings. She is survived by her daughter Anne and son-in-law, Jay Xu, grandchildren Jean-Pierre and Sophie Xu, of North Potomac, Maryland. She is also survived by her son Paul and daughter-in-law Lakshmi Bouchard, both of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Mariette also leaves behind many loving siblings, nieces and nephews in the United States and Canada.
