Opal Ann Smith, 89, passed peacefully at her home after months of failing health. She was born in Presque Isle, on March 15, 1936, to Joe and Anna Gagnon. Opal married Richard Smith on Oct. 12, 1953, together they raised 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
Opal graduated from Presque High School and attended NMVTI to obtain her nursing certificate, where she worked for Dr. George Higgins until retirement. Opal loved living at the lake with Richard (Dick) spending time with friends and family. She was active in her church, leading retreats and prayer groups. She loved praying the rosary with her husband and family.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years Richard, parents Joseph and Anna Gagnon, sister Meta Gagnon Wilcox Guiggey, daughter Karen Comfort, granddaughter Kimberly Comfort, great-great granddaughter, Melody. She is survived by her daughter Elaine Sirene, son Joseph and his wife Kathleen, son Steven and his wife Kimberly. Grandchildren Jessica Annaloro, Sarah Rainer and husband Paul, Andrew and Heather Smith, Camryn and Charles Michaud, Thomas and Kayla Smith, Michael and Jessica Smith and Peter Smith. Great grandchildren Megan, Ryan, Christian, Bryson, Lauren, Brooklyn, Maddie Cate, Lucas, Kolten, Ryker, Saylor and many great-great grandchildren.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sinclair. Burial will be at St. Mary’s in Presque Isle, Maine.
