Renaud Silva Albert Obituary Renaud Silva Albert, 93, died peacefully on December 10, 2024, at Northern Maine Medical Center. Many of his beloved nieces and nephews were at his side during his brief illness. Renaud was born in Madawaska, Maine on July 23, 1931, the fifth of six children of Zelia (Morneault) and Ambroise Albert. As the youngest boy, he acquired the nickname Babe, by which his family and numerous friends knew him. After graduating from Madawaska High School, he attended St. Louis University in Edmundston, NB, Canada where he graduated cum laude in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts. He served three years in the US army, mostly in Germany where he taught himself German. In 1960 he received a Master of Education from the University of Maine. For two decades, Babe taught French and Latin in various Maine communities including at Madawaska High School, Presque Isle High School, Deer Isle High School and Brunswick High School. He also taught in St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. He was highly regarded by his students. He possessed many letters from them expressing their appreciation for the language skills he imparted to them. On his return to the states, he worked at the Center for Bilingual / Bicultural Education in New Hampshire, becoming a noted historian and scholar of Franco-American studies. There, he compiled and published A Franco-American Overview, a 6-volume anthology demonstrating the contributions of Franco-Americans to the cultural heritage of the United States. Babe loved music, particularly opera and symphonies. He had collected numerous recordings and spent many a Saturday afternoon listening to opera on public radio. An avid piano player, he was editor of the booklet Chansons de Chez – Nous, while working for the National Materials Development Center in Manchester, New Hampshire. Babe also loved automobiles, collecting models and following trends with automotive magazines. One of his most recent thrills was to ride at high speed in his nephew-in-law’s Porsche. He maintained a lifelong interest in architecture, building models and designing houses which were then built for himself and for others. Ultimately, he returned to Madawaska where he worked for Albert Farms for several years and where he lived for the remainder of his days. Babe had a sharp mind with an uncanny ability to remember birthdays and important details of the lives of his many friends and relatives. His great nieces and nephews were particularly dear to him.
He is survived by multiple nieces and nephews and their many children and grandchildren. Most of them knew him and all loved him dearly.
He is predeceased by his parents, Ambroise Albert and Zelia (Morneault) Albert, and his siblings Patricia Albert Duplissa, Elmo Albert, Bernette Albert, Bernice Albert Martin, and Romella Albert Cyr.
A Catholic Mass in Babe’s memory is planned for next summer. His ashes will be interred at St. David Cemetery, Madawaska, Maine.
